Imagine going to pay off your holiday gifts layaway and discover that a generous person has already paid the tab. Anonymously! This “Secret Santa” trend has been growing steadily over the years, with its focus being to help the less fortunate.
While there are many worthwhile caring projects during the yuletide, I especially like this grassroots effort. The giving comes with no fancy fanfare and no formal recognition. But, it does come with a lot of heart. In these layaway cases, those covering the expenses don’t question the debtor’s race, religion, sex, sexual orientation or age. The only criteria is that there be a financial need.
Several leading retailers have reported hundreds of consumers participating in this Good Samaritan movement. One person even developed a website, payawaythelayaway.org , to assist others interested in becoming Santa’s helpers, but who don’t have the time to go the store or the money power to pay off an entire layaway.
It’s up to each of us to unwrap our own special brand of sharing. Make it count at Christmas. And, everyday! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!
