Dr. King’s Letter

The face of the Civil Rights Movement, Dr. Martin Luther King was called many things: leader, champion, orator, and teacher, among others. He was also labeled an extremist, a term which ultimately landed him behind bars in a Birmingham, Alabama jail.

During his lock up, he penned a letter addressing the notion of being an extremist. While his essay addressed specific points as it related to all men being treated equal, these few sentences summed up his thoughts:

“So, the question is not whether we will be extremist, but what kind of extremists we will be. Will we be extremists for hate, or will we be extremists for love? Will we be extremists for the preservation of injustice, or will we be extremists for the cause of justice?”

The pendulum swings both ways and each of us must decide where we want to place our strengths. For me, it will be love. Its power will continue to unite and move us closer to world peace.

Love and light,

Tony
