The Quilt

Dolly Parton has her “Coat of Many Colors.” I have my homemade quilt of three: red, white and blue.

And, just like in Dolly’s lyrics to her memorable, autobiographical song, “I recall a box of rags that someone gave us and how my Mama put the rags to use,” my grandmother, whom I called Mama, stitched my quilt using discarded fabric.

This week, as America celebrated Independence Day with prominent displays of red and white stripes and stars on a field of blue, it reminded me of my quilt. More importantly, it connected me with my grandmother.

Even though Mama passed away nearly seven years ago, her spirit is always around me. If I’m ever seeking advice that only a grandmother can give, I still reach out to her in thought, prayer and meditation. Lovingly, she places “signs” and “messages” along my path that provide guidance and reassurance.

Many of my psychic consultation clients have shared with me their own special spiritual bonds with loved ones who have made their transitions. Each connection is unique, yet universal in the understanding of the coexistence of the physical and spiritual realms.

While hiking on the Fourth of July in the California wilderness, Mama once again came to me with inspiration. She actually helped me write this blog. While meditating beside a mountain stream, she reminded me that Dolly Parton was her favorite singer. She not only loved her music, but respected Dolly’s upbringing (both were raised in the country in a large farming family). Before I knew it, I’d composed this post in my head.

The final words of Dolly’s “Coat of Many Colors” are “…that my Mama made for me. Just for me.” Thank you, Mama, for my quilt and for still being a part of my life.

Love and light,

Tony

“…that my Mama made for me. Just for me.”
